Rudolf FRIML and Sigmund ROMBERG
ROMANTIC HITS FROM THE OPERETTA AND MUSICAL COMEDIES
|
Rudolf Friml was born in Czechoslovakia in 1879 and, as with
many writers of American operettas, he was schooled in a
classical background. After immigrating to the United States in
1906, he started writing light compositions. In his early
operettas ("High Jinks", "Rose Marie", and "The Vagabond King")
there are definite roots suggestive of the Viennese schools of
Johann and later Josef Strauss.
Sigmund Romberg, a native of Hungary, came to America in 1909. His most famous musical comedies (the comtemporary reference to operetta) are "Maytime", "The Student Prince", "The Desert Song", "The Blossom Time", and, the last to be produced, "Up In Central Park". Both Friml and Romberg, along with Victor Herbert, were the catalysts that effected the transition of the operetta to the musical comedy form which preceded our greatest Broadway musicals. While lacking musical sophistication, their melodies have a retentive quality and warmth which perpetuates their appeal to audiences around the world. |
